Why he might be annoying:

He listed his occupation as 'rancher,' with acting as a hobby.
He admitted that a lot of the Westerns he starred in had been turned down by Gary Cooper and many of his comedies were Cary Grant rejects.
He said of his late-career fondness for Westerns, 'If I'm going to do claptrap, I may as well do claptrap on horseback.'
He said, 'I have no regrets, except perhaps one: I should have tried harder to be a better actor.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was so good looking, Anita Loos fainted when she saw him on the beach.
He and Ben Johnson were considered the two best riders in Hollywood Westerns.
He followed the advice of Will Rogers to live on half his salary and save the other half, becoming a multi-millionaire through livestock and real estate investments.
He was married to actress Frances Dee for 57 years until his death.
He said, 'People say I'm a one-note actor, but the way I figure it, those other guys are just looking for that one right note.'
In her Oscar acceptance speech, Maureen Stapleton thanked him as her 'inspiration,' later telling reporters, 'He's always been a good actor and I'm madly in love with him.'
