Vocalist

The Resume

    (April 7, 1948- )
    Born in Brooklyn, New York
Also known as Carolyn Strickland and Carolyn Cooke
    Recorded 'Doctor's Orders'

Why she might be annoying:

She is a one hit wonder.
She had roles on stage and TV (including commercials for Ideal Toys and General Mills), but turned to singing when acting fizzled out.
RCA signed her to a contract, but dropped her when she became pregnant at age 15.
Her song was on the charts in late 1974 along with fellow one hit wonder's Carl Douglas ('Kung Fu Fighting'), leading folks to believe they were somehow related (they aren't).
There's an ongoing feud whether her hit or Gloria Gaynor's 'Never Can Say Goodbye,' released at the same time, is the song that officially ushered in the disco era.
In 2003 she was a plaintiff on 'The People's Court' with Judge Marilyn Milian in a dispute with fellow disco diva Sharon Brown, who accused her of doing it just for publicity.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her mother is jazz performer Minnie Newsome, who was the inspiration for Cab Calloway's hit song 'Minnie the Moocher.'
She is a cousin of Sam Cooke.
At 10 years old she was a contestant on the TV game show 'Name That Tune,' and won.
She was a student at New York City's Quintanos High School for young professionals, and her classmates included Patty Duke, Bernadette Peters, Gregory Hines and Carol Lynley.
'Doctor's Orders' reached #2 on Billboard magazine's Disco chart, #9 on the R&B chart and #11 on the Hot 100 chart (and reached #4 in France).
Although she won a partial settlement in her 'People's Court' case, Judge Milian had her sing short versions of 'Doctor's Orders' and 'I Specialize in Love' (geez, what a goofy way to collect on a favorable judgement).
