Why she might be annoying:

One of her signature characters was the faceless head of the household who dealt with the mayhem created by Tom and Jerry.
During the Depression, she fell prey to housing discrimination in the West Adams district.
She later purchased a covenant in the same district, before the U.S. Supreme Court declared the practice unconstitutional.
Her Angel award, won in 1951, was presented by Ronald Reagan.
Citing mental cruelty, she had to waive alimony and attorney fees to achieve a divorce from her second husband (‘I’m just happy it’s all over. All I wanted was my freedom’).
Her grave listed her year of birth as 1914.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her Mammy character was famous for her enallage of using ‘is’ with almost every use of a pronoun (‘is you through laughin’?’ and ‘if you is a mouse catcher, then I is Lana Turner, which I ain’t’).
She scored the Gildersleeve gig – as maid Birdie Lee Coggins – when she made a mad dash down the NBC studio halls, tripped through the door, fell flat on her face, and laughed about it.
She welcomed Lena Horne, then shooting a tightly-budgeted movie that left her no hotel accommodations, into her house.
During the Second World War, she used her house to provide entertainment and chow to Los Angeles-area servicepeople.
She was an acting instructor; one of her key pupils was Marla Gibbs.
Her career lasted well into the 1970s.
