Why he might be annoying:

He developed his trademark screwball by accident while trying to master a sinking fastball.
He was twice invited to spring training with the Detroit Tigers only to be turned down because pitching coach George McBride and player-manager Ty Cobb felt he relied too much on the screwball (1926-27).
He threw screwballs so often for so long that his left arm became permanently twisted.

Why he might not be annoying:

During the 1934 All Star Game he struck out five future Hall of Famers in a row: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin.
He pitched an 18-inning shutout without giving up a single walk (July 2, 1933).
He won a record 24 consecutive games over two seasons (1936-37).
He was the first MVP elected unanimously (1936).
He was the first National League player to have his number retired.
