    Birth name was Marie Henri Beyle
    Wrote the novels 'The Red and the Black' (1830) and 'The Charterhouse of Parma' (1839)

Why he might be annoying:

    He wrote, 'I wanted to cover my mother with kisses and that there not be any clothing.... I always wanted to give them to her on the breast.'
    After losing his hair at an early age, he wore a purplish wig.
    He caught syphilis from a prostitute.
    He was expelled from Milan as a subversive (1828).
    He used over a hundred pen names.

    He served in the French army during the Napoleonic wars.
    He was a pioneer of realism in literature.
    In 'The Second Sex,' Simone de Beauvoir praised his empathy for women in his novels.
