Why he might be annoying:

Shortly after he was foaled (born), his would-be trainer, Bob Camac, and wife were murdered. This prompted Chapman to sell all of his horses.
However, when Chapman sold his entire horse stock, the buyer did not want two horses. Smarty was one of the rejected horses.
Just prior to his first race, he reared up and hit his head on an unpadded iron bar, fracturing his skull (July 2003).
Despite being favored in the Belmont to win the Triple Crown he came in second.

Why he might not be annoying:

His sire, Elusive Quality, held the 1 mile world record at Belmont.
He was named Smarty in honor of Patricia's mother, whose nickname was Smarty.
Prior to losing the Belmont, he was undefeated, winning all previous eight races.
