Why he might be annoying:

    During a semi-pro game (July 7, 1877), he collided at home with the other team's catcher, who was knocked unconscious and later died from a head injury.
    During his first year in the majors, he committed 34 errors in 39 games and was sent back to the minors.
    He frequently brought his dog with him into the dugout.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was left handed.
    He was one of the best power hitters of the deadball era and led the majors in slugging percentage six consecutive seasons (1882-87).
    John McGraw said, 'Big Dan in his prime, against the present-day pitching and the modern lively ball, would have hit as many home runs as anybody. I don't think I ever saw a longer hitter.'
