The Resume

    (May 20, 1882-June 10, 1949)
    Born in Kalundborg, Denmark
Best-known work was ‘Kristin Lavransdatter,’ a trilogy about life in Scandinavia during the Middle Ages (1920-22)
Won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1928)

Why she might be annoying:

She was a shy introvert with few friends.
Her first published novel, ‘Mrs. Marta Oulie’ (1907) became a success de scandale thanks to its opening line, ‘I have been unfaithful to my husband.’
She said that before she turned to historical epics, she wrote about ‘the immoral kind’ of love.
She wrote, ‘Most marriages run aground because the two people have tried to know each other too well.’
After her conversion to Roman Catholicism, most of her novels were thinly disguised propaganda for the faith.

Why she might not be annoying:

Growing up, she learned Norse sagas and Scandinavian folksongs from her archaeologist father.
She had to give up plans of going to college and work as a secretary to help support the family after her father died.
She donated the money from her Nobel Prize to a charity helping families with disabled children.
She later donated the Nobel Prize medal to be auctioned off to raise money for Finland after it was attacked by the Soviet Union (1940).
She was forced to flee Norway when the Germans invaded during WWII because of her earlier criticism of Hitler.
Her oldest son died in combat.
