    Born in Waterloo, Iowa
Birth name was Nikole Sheri Hannah
Staff writer for the New York Times

Why she might be annoying:

While a student at Notre Dame, she wrote a letter to the editor of the school paper declaring, ‘The white race is the biggest murderer, rapist, pillager, and thief of the modern world.’ (1995)
Commenting on looting and rioting that broke out during protests over the death of George Floyd, she said, ‘Destroying property, which can be replaced, is not violence.’ (2020)
She encouraged her social media followers to read a Twitter thread speculating that an increase in fireworks being set off in New York City was part of ‘a coordinated attack’ by the government to ‘disorient and destabilize the #BlackLivesMatterMovement.’ (She later deleted her retweet of the thread, saying, ‘That was an irresponsible use of my platform and beneath my own standards.’)

Why she might not be annoying:

She was a founder of the Ida B. Wells Foundation to promote investigative journalism (2016).
She received a MacArthur Foundation ‘Genius Grant.’ (2017)
She said, ‘Race is not something we should only write about once in a while or when a community explodes — and our lack of doing that means our coverage is actually very shallow and we’re not able to understand why things happen.’
She said, ‘It’s an amazing time to be a black journalist and I do feel as if we are in a bit of a Renaissance.’
