The Resume

His career record was 151-227-59 in 13 NHL seasons.
He initially objected to the idea of having a design painted on his goalie mask, as it was done without his permission.
He played three separate stints with the Red Wings.
Since he was also a part owner for the Whalers/Hurricanes franchise, he was unable to get fired, no matter how horrible of a job he did assembling the team.
His track record as a general manager was mediocre, as he whiffed on the majority of his draft selections, along with make questionable trades and signings.
He has a penchant for reacquiring players he traded away in the past.
He traded Chris Pronger to St. Louis for Brendan Shanahan, only to trade the latter over a year later.
He rehired Paul Mauricefour years after he fired him.
He watched his Hurricanes team bottom out to 30th place in the overall standings, a year after reaching the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals.
He resigned his posts from the Hurricanes, after he endured a falling out with team owner Peter Karmanos, Jr..
To add further insult to Karmanos, he appointed the latter's son as the Penguins assistant general manager
He resigned from the Penguins, citing personal reasons, but wouldn't divulge what exactly they were.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was one of the first goaltenders to adopt the practice of painting his goalie mask (inadvertently).
He was able to acquire Keith Primeau as part of the return for Shanahan.
When Primeau was unable to reach a contract agreement with the Hurricanes, he was able to get Rod Brind'Amour in a trade for Primeau's rights.
He was successfully able to convince former Whalers great Ron Francis to sign with the franchise in Carolina, seven years after he was traded away.
He was the architect of both Carolina teams that reached the Stanley Cup Finals in the 2000's, winning it all in 2006.
He showed genuine emotion, when he broke the news of Steve Chiasson's death to the media.
He drafted both Eric Staal and Cam Ward, who would both serve as the cornerstone players for the Hurricanes in the years following the lockout.
He was able to supply a Penguins team, built around both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin with a supporting cast that was able to win two Stanley Cup championships.
He is the second general manager in Penguins history, after Craig Patrick to won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.
He isn't afraid to make a bold trade, if he feels like it will benefit his team for success.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as builder, primarily on the strength of his success in both Carolina and Pittsburgh (2019).
