    Wrote or co-wrote the songs 'I Fought the Law,' 'Walk Right Back,' 'More Than I Can Say,' 'I'm No Stranger to the Rain,' and 'Love Is All Around ' (the Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song)

Why he might be annoying:

    He left Buddy Holly's pre-Crickets band to tour with Slim Whitman (1955).
    He tried unsuccessfully to cash in on Beatlemania with the album 'Beatles Hits Flamenco Style Guitar' and the single 'A Beatle I Want to Be.' (both 1964)
    He wrote jingles for McDonalds, Bell Telephone, Buick ,Honda, and Western Airlines.
    After season one of 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show,' he was asked to make the lyrics to 'Love Is All Around' more optimistic, most notably changing the final line from 'You might just make it after all' to 'You're gonna make it after all.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    'I Fought the Law' became a classic of rock rebellion after the Bobby Fuller Four had a Top Ten hit with it (1966).
    He wrote the song 'The Real Buddy Holly Story' in response to the inaccuracies in the movie 'The Buddy Holly Story.' (1978)
    He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1991).
    His songs have been covered by a wide range of artists, from Perry Como to Keith Whitley to the Clash.
