The Resume

    (November 16, 1920-February 20, 2011)
    Born in Long Beach, California
Won the US Women's Amateur Championship (1941)
Founding member of the LPGA (1950)
Also competed as Betty Hicks Newell

Why she might be annoying:

She is sometimes confused with Helen Hicks, who won the US Women's Amateur Championship a decade earlier.
She admitted to having had a terrible temper on the golf course in early days.
A player profile she wrote triggered a feud with fellow golfer Babe Didrikson Zaharias.
She never won an LPGA event.

Why she might not be annoying:

She recalled one of the disparities that inspired the creation of a women's pro tour: 'Byron Nelson won the All-American Open in 1943 and got $14,000. I won the women's division and received $500.'
She co-wrote 'Golf Manual for Teachers,' which became the Bible for golf instructors during the 1940s and 1950s.
After retiring from the pro golf tour, she became a pilot and flight instructor.
