TV Executive

The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

His last TV directing credit was an episode of Two and a Half Men.
His father probably smoothed his entry into the industry (Mark Sandrich directed Fred and Ginger musicals in the 1930s).
He later said about working with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz on the Desilu Comedy Hour: 'I was so young and caught in the middle of America's favorite couple breaking up. Psychologically, I didn't know how to handle it because I was in the middle.'
He chose to confine his talents solely to television - with his only film credit a Goldie Hawn-Chevy Chase movie.

Why he might not be annoying:

His television mentor was Sheldon Leonard.
During his time serving in the U.S. Army, he made documentaries for the Signal Corps.
He gave Henry Winkler and John Ritter their first TV jobs.
He was nominated for eleven Emmys and won four for Directorial Achievement in Comedy split evenly between his work on The Cosby Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
He directed the series pilots for The Bob Newhart Show, WKRP in Cincinnati, and Benson.
It was his idea to switch Betty White (cast originally as Blanche) and Rue McClanahan (cast as Rose) for the Golden Girls pilot - a decision so crucial that it probably saved the show.
Tom Werner said of him and his working relationship with the cast of The Cosby Show: 'Although we're really all here to service Bill Cosby's vision, the show is stronger because Jay challenges Bill and pushes him when appropriate.'
