Why he might be annoying:

He smoked cigars.
He was said to have no hobbies outside of politics.
During his first year as Speaker, Appropriations Committee Chair Clarence Cannon blasted his leadership as the worst he had seen during forty years in the House.
His continuing support for the Vietnam War alienated him from liberal Democrats.
Morris Udall tried to replace him as Speaker, the first time a Speaker was challenged by a member of his own party (1969).

Why he might not be annoying:

While working as a clerk in a law office as a teen, he read the firm's law books during the day, took night classes, and passed the bar at age 21 despite never attending high school.
He served in the Army during World War I.
He sponsored the bill that created NASA.
President Lyndon B. Johnson said, 'From the first time I entered the House of Representatives as a young Congressman to this very hour, I have known few men whose courage and compassion, decency of character and honorable objectives match that of Speaker McCormack.'
During 51 years of marriage, he and his wife Harriet never spent a night apart.
