Public installations include 'Lipstick (Ascending) on Caterpillar Tracks' at Yale; 'Free Stamp' outside City Hall in Cleveland, Ohio; 'Typewriter Eraser, Scale X' at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; 'Clothespin' in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and 'Spoonbridge and Cherry' in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Awarded the National Medal of Arts (2000)

Why he might be annoying:

Time magazine called him 'a prematurely balding troll of 38.' (1967)
For an art festival in Manhattan, he dug a coffin-sized hole in Central Park, filled it back in and called the result an 'underground sculpture.'
He exhibited a collage made of cigarette butts.
He released a 'statement' about his art that included comments like 'I am for art that is political-erotical-mystical' and 'I am for art that is smoked like a cigarette, smells like a pair of shoes.'

Why he might not be annoying:

While visiting Chicago during the Democratic convention (1968), he was 'tossed to the ground by six swearing troopers who kicked me and cursed me and called me a Communist.'
The New York Times said he had 'the most sensuous touch' among American Pop Artists.
He said, 'If I were as didactic in my work as I really am, I would bore people to death. But because I can put my message in a colorful, engaging form, my message isn't heavy.'
