Why he might be annoying:

    He never played professionally
He initially started his coaching career as a defensive coach, before switching over to offense.
His offensive schemes relied heavily on throwing the ball, dubbed the 'run and shoot' scheme.
His offensive style was derided as the 'chuck and duck offense' by Buddy Ryan.
He came to blows with Buddy on the sidelines during a nationally televised game, after he called a play that saw the Oilers fumble the ball with 37 seconds on the clock (January 2, 1994).
Despite being considered an offensive mastermind when he was hired by the Chargers, his stint as head coach was viewed as a disaster by football pundits.
He was fired by the Chargers five games into his second season with the team (1998).
He opted to retire from the NFL, after speculation began running rampant that he was on the verge of being fired by the Giants.
His retirement lasted seven years, until he came out of it to be a head coach in the second incarnation of the XFL.

Why he might not be annoying:

He earned a degree from Southern Connecticut State University in physical education and a Master's degree in athletic administration from Idaho State University.
He briefly served as the co-head coach of the women's basketball team at Idaho State for their inaugural season (1974-75).
He posted a 67-22-3 record in four seasons as the head coach at his alma mater.
He was instrumental in helping Warren Moon elevate his game, earning the offensive coordinator position the following year.
He served as the first offensive coordinator in the history of the Jaguars franchise.
He made Buddy Ryan eat his words when he was hired for the Chargers head coaching position four years after the sideline scuffle, when Ryan proclaimed he would be out of the NFL, selling insurance within two years.
He was credited with designing the offensive scheme which helped Eli Manning defeat Tom Brady in the Super Bowl twice.
