The Resume

    (September 30, 1765-December 22, 1815)
Born in Valladolid, Michoacan, New Spain
    Catholic priest and revolutionary rebel
Fought in the Mexican War of Independence
    Wrote 'Sentiments of the Nation'
Captured, tried and executed for treason in 1815

Why he might be annoying:

His birth name was the overlong Jose Maria Teclo Morelos Perez y Pavon.
He was a descendant of the conquistador Hernan Cortes.
There's an ongoing debate as to his representation in art and whether he is to be depicted as a Criollo (white Spaniard) or a Mestizo (of 'mixed or Indigenous descent).
He was ordained as a secular cleric and fathered three children with one mistress.
One of his biographers charged that he had fathered various children with anonymous women (although some believe this was a politically motivated attack on his character).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was born into poverty and worked as a cowhand until he was 25.
He joined the campaign launched by his fellow priest Miguel Hidalgo and quickly proved to be a capable military strategist.
He was invaluable at both gathering weapons and recruiting fighters for the independence cause.
In his first nine months, he won more than 20 victories against the Spanish (not bad for a priest with no military experience).
When he was captured by Royalist forces, he ordered his fellow soldiers to flee and save themselves. He was executed by firing squad.
His remains were exhumed and transferred to the Column of Independence in Mexico City, along with other national heroes.
He was minted to appear on the 50-peso note (1997).
The Mexican state of Morelos and city of Morelia are named after him.
