Baseball Player

The Resume

    (August 9, 1919-July 21, 2010)
    Born in Lawrence, Kansas
Catcher for the New York Yankees (1947-54)
Manager for the Yankees (1961-63,1966-73), Detroit Tigers (1974-78) and Boston Red Sox (1981-84)
Win-loss record as manager of 1,619-1,531

Why he might be annoying:

As a player, he was a second or third string catcher behind Yogi Berra, appearing in only 91 games over eight seasons.
His dirt-kicking and cap-throwing tantrums with umpires got him ejected from 45 games as manager.
During his second stint as Yankee manager, he led the team to their first last-place finish since 1912 (1966).

Why he might not be annoying:

He fought at the Normandy landings and the Battle of the Bulge, earning a Purple Heart and Silver Star.
He and Hugh Jennings of the Tigers were the only managers to win pennants in each of their first three seasons.
He avoided criticizing players publicly, noting 'I don't think you can humiliate a player and expect him to perform.'
