Mathematician

The Resume

    (June 8, 1930- )
Born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Professor of Mathematics at Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1956-2000)
Analyzed conflict and cooperation through game theory
Co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics (2005)

Why he might be annoying:

The one course in economics that he took in college 'baffled and bored' him, and he dropped it after a few weeks.
He married the sister of his late first wife.
He joined Professors for a Strong Israel, an organization opposed to any 'land for peace' deal with the Palestinians.
He said, 'All these cries for peace we hear in Israel, especially from our side, do not bring peace any closer -- they only push it away.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He fled to the United States with his family two weeks before the Kristallnacht pogrom (1938).
His son Shlomo died in combat in Lebanon (1982).
He figured that his PhD dissertation on the topology of knots had no practical use; he was surprised when a grandson in medical school asked about it, because DNA tangling inside cells may lead to cancer.
