The Resume

    (December 18, 1980- )
    Born in Norfolk , Virginia
Tight End for the New Orleans Saints
Attended Duke University and University of Georgia
Drafted by the New England Patriots 32nd pick overall in the first round of 2004 NFL draft
Signed a three-year deal with the Cleveland Browns (2010)
Signed with the New Orleans Saints at the expiration of his contract (2013)
Known for viral Facebook commentary on the Darren Wilson verdict (Nov. 25, 2014)

Why he might be annoying:

He admits to being a perfectionist.
He was on the injured list for almost his entire rookie season for the Patriots, playing in only one game (incidentally, this was the year that his team went on to win the Superbowl).
He tends to post Biblical verses on his Twitter feed and Facebook walls, in reference to his games.
He had a lengthy career in the NFL, but only received attention for his addressing a controversial issue in a Facebook post.
Despite writing a non-partisan post which neglected to take sides on the Wilson verdict, he inevitably became a conservative darling for the Right, mainly for his belief that the riots in Ferguson are 'a Sin problem, not a Skin problem.'
Many who co-opt his message to bash Michael Brown's family tend to ignore his also writing in the post: 'I'M OFFENDED, because of the insulting comments I've seen that are not only insensitive but dismissive to the painful experiences of others.'
When addressing the Ferguson riots in interviews, he blamed Hollywood and pop culture for 'glorifying violence' (welcome to the club, buddy).
Some of the surprise surrounding the articulateness of his message gives the impression that he is being praised as 'one of the good ones.'

Why he might not be annoying:

His message was met with almost universal acclaim - it preached tolerance, understanding, and personal responsibility.
He was hailed as one of the good guys of the NFL even before his post, and he claimed to be surprised at the positive reaction to it.
He tied for the third highest score on the Wunderlic test, at a score of 48 (2004).
He chose not to be bitter about missing out on the Patriots' 2004 Super Bowl win, saying 'football is what I do, not who I am.'
He held the record for six touchdown passes during the Patriots' 2007 season, making him the third best on the roster.
He declined to take a shot at Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson when prompted to during an interview on Fox News.
He and his wife founded the One More charity, 'devoted to spreading the love and hope of Christ to One More soul by meeting real needs, promoting education and providing enrichment opportunities.'
He holds an annual youth football camp for underprivileged kids, grades second to sixth.
He is the NFL spokesperson for the All Pro Dad organization.
He possibly had job security as a professional writer when his football career came to an end.
His father was a pastor who raised him to be a devout Christian.
He said 'question what you see around you rather than blindly complying with what others do. Be courageous in your quest for knowledge and understanding.'
