Why he might be annoying:

He was considered the most conservative member of the Senate.
In January 1999, he announced that he was going to run for president, even though George W. Bush was the choice of the party.
He then left the Republican Party and sought the nomination of the U.S. Taxpayers Party (more conservative than the Republican Party) for president.
A month after, he changed his mind again and announced himself an independent, then in October he dropped the idea of being president, endorsed Bush, and renounced his previous disloyalties.
Even though his party's stance is to support free trade, he opposes it.
Despite being a conservative Republican, he endorsed John Kerry.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the Vietnam War.
He taught history and English before becoming a politician.
Being a former soldier, he favored raising the salaries of soldiers.
He supported term limits for Senators and Congressmen.
He supported tough crime policies.
He stood up for his viewpoints, no matter how unpopular.
