Why he might be annoying:

During spring training in 1991, he cursed out Barry Bonds in front of reporters and news cameras.
He is a heavy smoker.
He has a foul mouth.
His Pittsburgh Pirates were one of the most talented teams in the early 1990's and failed to get to the World Series.
He left the Colorado Rockies after just one season.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he took over the Tigers, they had averaged 100 losses for three years. He guided them to the playoffs his first year.
Despite the spring training incident, Bonds has often said he was the best manager he ever played for, and credits him for nurturing his career.
He doesn’t kiss up to his superstars.
He wins in small markets.
His teams are aggressive at the plate and on the base paths.
In 1997, he led the Florida Marlins to the World Series championship, becoming the first to do so with a wild card team.
By managing the Tigers, he returns to the organization that originally signed him as a catcher in 1963.
