    He dropped out of school at age 14.
    He lied about his age to join the Canadian Expeditionary Force at age 15.
    His second wife was his first wife's niece.
    His attempt to expand his holiday camp empire to the Bahamas during the 1950s was a failure.

    He was a bugler with the Canadian army in Europe during World War I.
    He secured the exclusive license to sell bumper cars in Europe (1928).
    He popularized his camps with the slogan 'A week's vacation for a week's wages.'
    When his company went public, shares sold out in five minutes.
    During World War II, his holiday camps were requisitioned by the British armed forces for training camps.
    Also during World War II, he was consulted by the Ministry of Supply on how to improve worker morale in munitions factories.
    He donated £100,000 to establish a fund to benefit police officers disabled while on duty (1966).
