Why he might be annoying:

'Les Miserables' was a critical failure.
The musical was critically panned when it opened in London (1985), however like the book, its popularity came from the masses and not the critical elite.
He gave all his sons the middle name, Victor.
The premier of his play, 'Hernani,' was interrupted by audience fist fights (1830).
It took him over 15 years to write 'Les Miserables.'

His book, 'Les Miserables,' inspired the world's most popular musical, 'Les Mis' (playing in 29 countries and 196 cities, seen by over 42 million people as of September, 2000).
Currently, it is the longest running play still on Broadway (Opened in 1987) and fourth longest running play ever on Broadway (Bruce's favorite musical).
There have been over twenty movies of 'Les Miserables' made.
There have been 31 cast recordings of 'Les Mis.'
The Vatican banned 'Les Miserables.'
He was a political leftist and was forced into exile by the French monarchy (1851-70).
His concerns were always for the down and out.
