The Resume

    (March 23, 1938-October 17, 2006)
Born in New York City, New York
    Born Joseph Christopher Glenn
Announcer of In the News (1976–86)
Anchor of CBS News Nightwatch (1982–84), The World Tonight (later CBS World News Roundup, Late Edition, 1998–99; morning edition, 1999-2006)
Died of liver cancer age 68
National Radio Hall of Fame inductee (posthumous, November 2006)

Why he might be annoying:

Have you heard of 30 Minutes? The Saturday morning variant of the venerable newsmagazine? No? That was him hosting, for four years.
He had just signed off for the day when word came of the Challenger explosion — upon which he hightailed it back.
Well after the computer-based playback system, he remained steadfastly loyal to his analog cartridge (or Fidelipac, a then-common means of recording station identification).
Visually, his older self barely resembled his strapping younger self.
He retired, after some 35 years at CBS, mere months before death!

Why he might not be annoying:

While serving in the Army, he worked at the American Forces Network.
He was among the first journalists on the network to own a personal computer.
Many viewers of Saturday morning cartoons of the era would recognize his rich voice instantly.
His documentary on the rumor of Paul McCartney’s death (for the local station) became a collector’s item among radio news insiders.
Words of wisdom for new journalists? ‘Get a job, want to do it real bad, do it real good, and stick with it. Practice, practice, practice — same old story.’
