U.S. Senator

The Resume

    (October 20, 1900-July 22, 1974)
    Born in Madison, Wisconsin
    US Senator from Oregon (1945-69)
Died while campaigning to regain his Senate seat

Why he might be annoying:

He was a Republican turned Independent (1952) turned Democrat (1955).
He feuded with Oregon’s junior Senator, Richard Neuberger, with their relationship deteriorating to the point where they refused to meet face to face, but instead sent messengers with angry letters to each other’s office.
He announced that he had no intention of running for President in 1960, then joined the race as a ‘favorite son’ candidate.
After losing his home state primary to John F, Kennedy, he did not bother attending the Democratic convention.
He set a record (since broken) by delivering a 22 hour long filibuster (April 24-25, 1953).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was president of his class at Madison High School.
A horse kicked him in the face, breaking his jaw in four places and knocking out several of his upper teeth (1951).
He was one of six Senators to sign Margaret Chase Smith’s ‘Declaration of Conscience’ opposing the tactics of Joseph McCarthy.
He was one of only two Senators to vote against the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that gave LBJ a blank check to escalate the Vietnam War (1964).
His outspoken opposition to the Vietnam War resulted in the FBI investigating him in an attempt to dig up information that could discredit him.
His motto was ‘Principles before politics.’
