    He was portrayed by Edward G. Robinson.
    With mathematician Carl Gauss he helped pioneer electric telegraphy to transmit messages from Brussels to Aachen.
    His first success came in 1859 when he transmitted the text of a speech by Napoleon III to London.
    His agency provided the first European reports on Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
    His son committed suicide in 1915.
