    It lost its civic charter as a result of the collapse of the shipbuilding industry (1862).
    It faced a second economic collapse, following the closure of the locomotive shops in the 1980's.
    It was primarily an industrial city for most of its history.
    Due to its location, it is prone to having Nor'easter storms during the winters.
    Despite being considered a major hub city in the Atlantic Canada region, it is overshadowed by Halifax.
    It was the site of one of the deadliest attacks on RCMP officers, following the events of Mayerthorpe, Alberta and preceding those in Portapique, Nova Scotia six years later (June 4-6, 2014).

    It was officially settled by Pennsylvania German immigrants from Philadelphia in 1766.
    It is the first official bilingual city in Canada.
    It is considered a major hub centre for corporations in Atlantic Canada.
    Its economy was able to successfully rebound following its near collapses in the 1860's and 1980's.
    Its location along the Petitcodiac River makes it home to one of the few rare tidal bores to occur in North America.
    Its resiliency to overcome adversity led to the city's motto as 'I Rise Again.'
