Why he might be annoying:

He was a violent drunk.
He beat his wife and threw his baby son against a wall.
Although married, he started having sex with his 17-year-old male house guest, poet Arthur Rimbaud.
He abandoned his family for Rimbaud, then got drunk and tried to shoot him.
He was sent to prison, where a doctor observed that 'his anus can be dilated rather significantly by a moderate separation of the buttocks.'
After getting out of prison, he became a religious nut.
Although he got sober in jail, he eventually started drinking again.
He frequented both female and male prostitutes.

Why he might not be annoying:

Towards the end of his life, his poetry became very popular.
He was named France's 'Prince of Poets.'
Thousands of fans attended his funeral.
He had an unhappy life.
He was an inspiration for the punk band Television.
