He watched 13 hours of TV a day growing up, adding 'I was sort of hypnotized by it as a kid.'

A lot of his shows appeal to the lowest common denominator.
The shows he created that didn't air include 'The World's Most Embarassing Throw Up Moments' and 'O.J. Simpson: If I Did It.'
Nigel Lythgoe called him 'either a brilliant programmer or an evil genius bent on hastening the end of civilization as we know it.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He has a knack for catchy program titles.
He gave Fox ratings success for cheap.
He noted, 'Being a young network, we didn't have Miss America or the Oscars. So the thought was, How can we invent stuff?'
Asked if his shows were socially responsible, he replied, 'My responsibility is to entertain, to get you away from your problems for a few hours.'
