The government he presided over persecuted over 100 million Falun Gong practitioners.
He pretends to practice Buddhism while persecuting Buddhists.
He supported the Tiananmen Square massacre.
When he was made general secretary, he replaced Zhao Ziyang, who sympathized with the demonstrators.

During his reign, capitalism became the de facto economic system of China.
He is generally considered more moderate than his predecessors.
