The Resume

    (June 17, 1999- )
    Born in Moscow, Russia
Became a citizen of Kazakhstan (2018)
Won the women's singles title at Wimbledon (2022)

Why she might be annoying:

She originally focused on gymnastics and ice skating until she was told she was too tall to succeed professionally at either sport.
Her coach described her as a perfectionist who gets frustrated when things don't go the way she planned.
Her Wimbledon win was controversial since the All England Tennis Club had banned Russian players from competing in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
Asked if she felt like a Russian or a Kazakh, she replied, 'Tough question.'
She avoided commenting on the war in Ukraine (other than generic calls for peace) by saying her English was not good enough.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her height helped her develop an excellent serve.
She led the WTA with 192 aces in 2020.
She encourages people to adopt pets from animal shelters.
She was the first Kazakh player, male or female, to reach the finals of a Grand Slam tournament.
At a press conference after her Wimbledon victory, she produced her Kazakh passport as proof of her citizenship and noted, 'I didn't choose where I was born.'
