Why he might be annoying:

    He secured a $6 million earmark for a defense contractor whose executives were significant contributors to his campaigns (2007).
    He was the only Senator to vote against a bill amendment declaring that climate change is real and not a hoax (2015).
    He was yet another Republican Senator whose opinion on the advisability of holding Supreme Court confirmation hearing during an election year flip-flopped during the four years between the nominations of Merrick Garland and Amy Coney Barrett.
    He called Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson a 'beneficiary of an affirmative action quota.'
    He said the US should not rule out first use of nuclear weapons in a conflict with Russia (2021).
    On social media, he touted that the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 would provide $28.6 billion in 'targeted relief' to help independent restaurant owners survive the COVID-19 pandemic, while omitting that he had voted against the Act.

Why he might not be annoying:

    At age sixteen, he was a page for Rep. Jamie Whitten, whom he would eventually replace in the House of Representatives.
    He was an officer in the US Air Force (1976-80) and Air Force Reserves (1980-2003).
    He was a member of the Helsinki Commission monitoring human rights in Europe.
    He worked with Senator Ben Cardin to impose sanctions on Russian officials accused of human rights violations (2012).
    He was one of three officials (with President Obama and a Mississippi state judge) sent letters containing ricin in a bioterrorism attack (April, 2013).
