Nurse

The Resume

    (1921-2005)
    Born in Milton, Massachusetts
Served as an Army nurse during World War II
Fell in love with and married German POW Frederick Albert
Story received attention in the 2018 book 'Enemies in Love' by Alexis Clark

Why she might be annoying:

Her name is similar to an MGM movie musical star.
She literally fell in love with a Nazi.
She very easily could have been court martialed for fraternizing with the enemy if it was ever discovered.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her grandmother was a slave who escaped via the Underground Railroad.
Her father was a World War I veteran, inspiring her to go into the service.
She was among the small minority of black Army Corp Nurses due to racist quotas limiting their number.
She first met Frederick Albert when he was working as a cook in the mess hall at the POW Camp in Arizona.
Albert was a Luftwaffe medic from Vienna who had been conscripted but didn't ideologically support the Nazis' racism.
Just before Albert was released and deported in April 1946, they conceived a son, enabling him to obtain a visa and return the following year to marry in New York.
They moved to Boston - and then Germany - but experienced discrimination due to being in an interracial marriage in both places, and they eventually settled in Connecticut.
They were married for over fifty years, until Albert's death in 2001.
The video 'The Unlikely Romance of a Black Nurse and a German P.O.W. in World War II' (promoting the 'Enemies in Love' book) got over 2 million hits on YouTube.
