    He defended Stalin's purges.
He exaggerated his activities during the Spanish Civil War and as a member of the French Resistance.

He had two sons out of wedlock with his mistress.
His second wife was his half-brother's widow.
Philosopher Raymond Aron described him as 'One third genial, one third false, one third incomprehensible.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an outspoken critic of French colonial policies.
He broke with Communism over the Soviet non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany.
For his activities with the Resistance, he received the French Croix de Guerre and the British Distinguished Service Order.
The manuscript of one of his novels was destroyed by the Gestapo after he was captured (1944).
His two sons died in a car crash (1961).
