U.S. Congressman

The Resume

    (January 17, 1937- )
    Born in Ames, Iowa
Graduated with a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (1965)
Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Iowa's 1st district (1973-77)
Indicted in March 2001 with 66 charges of bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud
Plead guilty of 31 of the charges and sentenced to seven years in a federal penitentiary in 2003
Father of Marc Mezvinsky, who married former first daughter Chelsea Clinton (July 31, 2010)

Why he might be annoying:

He is twice divorced, including his second wife Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania (1993-95) and mother of Marc.
He practiced law for just a short period before moving on to get rich quick schemes.
He lost a Pennsylvania Senate bid in 1980, an attorney general bid in 1988 and a Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor in 1990.
His shady dealings, including Nigerian e-mail scams, bank structuring plots and a ponzi scheme, cost family members and friends over $10 million.
He filed for bankruptcy only after he drained his wife's bank account (forcing her withdrawl from a U.S. Senate race), took his mother-in-law's $300,000 life savings before she died, and had the F.B.I. come calling.
During his downfall, he would scream at family members for no reason and swear at drivers during fits of road rage.
He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and tried to use it as a mental illness defense during his trial, but the judge wouldn't allow it.
He was released from the 'country club prison' in April 2008 after serving five years, still owing his victims millions of dollars in restitution.

Why he might not be annoying:

At Ames High School, he was an all-state football end and member of the state championship basketball and track teams of 1955.
While attending the University of Wisconsin, he flipped the car he was driving, suffered a concussion, couldn't focus afterward and had to drop out.
He voted to impeach Richard Nixon.
When he married Marjorie Margolies, he adopted her two kids from a previous marriage, had two of his own with her and adopted three foreign kids with her.
He said of his son Marc's marriage to Chelsea Clinton, 'I'm a proud papa...These are two wonderful human beings that have sensitivity about life and a warm regard for family and that's what it's really about.'
