As a player, he practiced so long that he sometimes neglected to eat.
As a Lakers executive, he was so tense during playoff games that he refused to watch them.
Though he led the Lakers to the NBA Finals nine times, they lost all but one of those times.
He had the same comb-over hairstyle all of his life.

He was an All-Star every year that he played.
He has one of the most famous buzzer-beaters in NBA history, a 60-footer that sent an NBA Finals game to overtime (1970).
He is the only player to be named NBA Finals MVP from a losing team (1969).
He helped build the Laker dynasties of the 1980s and the early 2000s.
He helped lead the Lakers to one title as a player and eight championships as an executive.
