He played professionally in two sports, years before Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders.
The Pistons owner gave him the coaching job to entice him to quit baseball.
As a player-coach, he encountered several general managers who wanted to trade for him.
His number wasn't retired by the Knicks until years after his retirement.
He was the final commissioner of the American Basketball Association when it folded.

He helped the Knicks win two NBA titles.
He had a strong work ethic.
He is considered one of the best defensive basketball players ever.
At 24, he was the youngest coach in NBA history.
As Knicks' general manager he selected Patrick Ewing as their #1 draft pick.

He died of a heart attack.
