    Born in Pownal, Vermont
    Partner of Jay Gould in the Erie Railroad
    Known as Big Jim, Diamond Jim and Jubilee Jim

Why he might be annoying:

    He left school to join a circus.
    He smuggled cotton across enemy lines during the Civil War.
    He and Gould engaged in wholesale bribing of legislators and judges while running the Erie.
    He carried on an extramarital affair with showgirl Josie Matthews.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His assistance to victims of the Great Chicago Fire was remembered in a song, 'Jim Fisk (He Never Went Back On The Poor).'
    Mansfield left him for Ned Stokes, after which she and Stokes tried to blackmail him by threatening to make his letters to Mansfield public.
    After he refused to pay up, he and Stokes got into an argument during which Stokes shot him dead.
