He dropped out of high school when a teacher accuses him of plagiarizing a 20-page paper on Napoleon.
He enlisted in the army for three years, but only served one.
A Broadway theater was named in his honor, but he died a few weeks before the ceremony.
His plays were inspired by his anger over the racist treatment of Black Americans.

He changed his name to August Wilson to honor his father, Frederick August Kittel, and his mother, Daisy Wilson.
He did odd jobs as a porter, short-order cook, gardener, and dishwasher while educating himself at the public library.
His ten-play cycle about black American history is one of the major theatrical achievements in the history of U.S. theater.
He won two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama.
He won a Tony Award for ‘Fences.'
He is considered one of America's greatest playwrights.
