In the 1984 Olympics she and Zola Budd of South Africa were favored in the 3,000 meters. During a turn, they tangled up and Mary fell to the ground.
She erupted in tears and had some nasty words for Zola.

She has undergone a number of operations to continue her running.
She rarely wears a bra when running.
