(The Letter Song),' 'Show Me,' 'Men Are Getting Scarce,' 'I Gotcha' and 'Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)'
Died of a heart attack at age 49

Why he might be annoying:

He signed with two different record labels and recorded over a dozen songs in the late '50s, all flops.
He spoke in a preachy voice in some of his songs, a precursor to rap.
He purposely made his voice hoarse before recording because he felt the raspiness was more 'artistically authentic.'
He abruptly quit show biz in 1972, became a Muslim minister and assumed the name of Joseph X, later renamed to Yusuf Hazziez.
He took his old name back in 1977 to record a cheesy disco song.

Why he might not be annoying:

He stated he got into the music business to make enough money to buy a house for the two women he admired most, his mother and grandmother.
He entered an amateur night contest at the Apollo Theatre, took the top prize and was given an four-week booking.
He identified with country songs that 'told a story' and adopted a style that folks could ID with as part of their own life experiences.
'I Gotcha' went gold and reached #2 in the U.S. on Billboard's Pop Singles chart.
He was a devoted Houston Oilers fan and recorded a tribute song to his favorite player titled, 'Do the Earl Campbell.'
Pallbearers at his funeral included Ben E. King and Wilson Pickett.
