The Resume

Why Gimme a Break! might be annoying:

It aired in ten different time slots over six seasons.
After season 2, Carter delivered an ‘either they go or I go’ ultimatum to have the original producers replaced.
It made a recurring gag out of the death of the family goldfish.
After the Chief’s daughters grew up, Joey Lawrence was brought in for an infusion of cuteness.
’Washington Post’ TV critic Tom Shales wrote, ‘If I thought television could get substantially worse than this, I am not sure I would have the courage or desire to turn the set on again.’
Carter said, ‘I don’t want to go my grave being known as the girl from ‘Gimme a Break.’ That wasn’t me, it was just a job.’

Why Gimme a Break! might not be annoying:

It was part of NBC’s first ‘Must See TV’ Thursday line-up, with Fame, Cheers, and Hill Street Blues.
Carter sang the show’s theme song.
Whitney Houston made her acting debut on the show as one of Katie’s friends in a season 3 episode.
Carter was good friends with Sweet, was at his side when he died, and delivered a eulogy at his funeral.
Nell’s maternal instincts towards the Chief’s daughters and Joey was paralleled by Carter’s real-life interactions with the younger members of the cast.
When the actresses portraying Chief’s daughters were let go after season 5, Carter intervened to keep Lara Jill Miller as a recurring cast member.
