Why he might be annoying:

He enslaved thousands of Native Americans under Spanish rule.
He slaughtered the peaceful Tainos natives who lived in Puerto Rico.
He was so brutal as governor of the Puerto Rican settlement that the Spanish removed him from office (1511).
He came across Florida while searching for the fictional Fountain of Youth.
His attempts to establish a permanent settlement in Florida failed miserably.

Why he might not be annoying:

He discovered the Gulf Stream.
He saw his voyages to the Americas as 'spiritual' journeys.
He gave Florida its name, calling it 'Pascua de Florida' (Feast of Flowers).
He was mortally wounded by a poison arrow during a skirmish with an angry tribe (July 1521).
