U.S. Governor

The Resume

    (July 21, 1922-August 2, 2005)
    Born in Troy, New York
    Middle name was Sterner
    4th Governor of Alaska (December 2, 1974 – December 6, 1982)
    Alaska State Senator (1967-73)

Why he might be annoying:

    He wrote three autobiographies.
His opponents nicknamed him 'Zero-Growth Hammond' for his opposition to land development.
He hosted a local television series for seven years called Jay Hammond's Alaska (gee that sounds familiar...).
The New York Times compared him 'to a Kodiak bear, though few Kodiaks habitually wear a flannel shirt and black beret, as he often did.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He served as a Marine Corps fighter pilot in World War II with the Black Sheep Squadron.
He spent his first two years in Alaska traveling by dog team to trap animals for furs, then worked as a laborer.
He served as an Alaska state representative from 1959 to 1965.
He retired from the state legislature in 1972, only to defeat former governors Wallly Hickel and Keith Miller in the Republican Primary and upset three-term Governor William Egan in the general election.
He oversaw the creation of the Alaska Permanent Fund in 1976, which, since the early 1980s, has paid annual dividends to Alaska residents.
    He advocated for fiscal responsibility.
During his tenure, federal land reserves in Alaska grew sharply, fishery stocks revived and the state tourism industry was established.
