The movie about his life depicts him doing his medical work and saving lives during the Japanese invasion of mainland China, when it was actually Dutch colonial Indonesia.
He later joked about the highly fictionalized film being the only real cause of his fame.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is widely regarded as one of the first national heroes of World War II.
He left his medical practice to serve as a medical missionary in China, with his wife, in 1914 (they served for twelve years).
He worked as a doctor for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Depression, treating malaria and other diseases among the workers in his local Arkansas.
During World War II, he acted as liaison officer for 40 wounded American servicemen from the USS Marblehead in a Dutch hospital on the island of Java.
He was awarded the Navy Cross for saving 12 of the most severely wounded from certain capture by the Japanese and for accompanying them to safety in western Australia.
He was referenced by President Roosevelt in a radio broadcast made in April 1942.
Cecil B. DeMille reportedly heard the broadcast and resolved make a movie based on his story.
According to his son, all of the proceeds that he received from the movie were donated to a hospital for the deaf and blind in Little Rock.
