The Resume

    (November 27, 1980-May 27, 1982)
    Aired on ABC
Premise: Two single guys have to disguise themselves in drag when the only apartment they can afford is in the women-only Susan B. Anthony Hotel
    Cast:
    Tom Hanks as Kip Wilson/Buffy
    Peter Scolari as Henry Desmond/Hildegarde
Wendy Jo Sperber as Amy Cassidy
    Donna Dixon as Sonny Lumet
    Holland Taylor as Ruth Dunbar
    Thelma Hopkins as Isabelle Hammond
Theme song was Billy Joel's 'My Life' (as covered by some anonymous session singer)

Why Bosom Buddies might be annoying:

It was intended as a standard buddy comedy until the producers taked about doing it in 'a sophisticated Billy Wilder way' to network execs.
When the ABC suits asked what the producers meant with the Wilder comparison, they mentioned 'Some Like It Hot,' at which point ABC bought the show on the condition that it included men in drag.
Like Three's Company, it was based on the premise that people in sitcom land will do just about anything for a decent apartment.
Its first season was shortened by a Screen Actors Guild strike.
Its ratings slipped as ABC kept moving it around their schedule.
The whole drag thing was de-emphasized in the second season as the rest of the cast discovered Kip and Henry's ruse.

Why Bosom Buddies might not be annoying:

Hanks and Scolari had good chemistry together.
The cast was frequently allowed to improvise.
Showrunner Chris Thompson (who later produced The Larry Sanders Show) called it 'my completely favorite experience in show business,' because the network left them alone to experiment.
It serves as inspiration to young actors: you can start off cross-dressing on a short-lived sitcom and go on to win a pair of Oscars.
Hanks was not too big to reunite with the rest of the cast when TV Land honored the show's 30th anniversary.
