A friend discovered her lifeless body hours before she was to perform at Harlem's Apollo Theater (1995).

She garnered a Tony Award nomination and a Theatre World Award for 'Best Newcomer' for her Broadway role (1981).
In 1992, Blues and Soul Magazine voted her 'Best Female Vocalist.'
Both her grandmother and mother died within a month of each other (1993).
She participated in numerous AIDS benefits and visited AIDS hospital wards.
