    He was fanatically religious.
    He was also a sex maniac, which was not a happy combination.
    He joined a monastery, but got kicked out for having sex with women.
    While still married himself, he lived in a ménage à trois with another married couple.
    Fans of Goethe’s ‘Faust’ book consider the opera version a travesty.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He knew a lot about Renaissance music.
    ‘Faust’ and ‘Roméo et Juliette’ are still performed today.
    ‘Faust’ was Queen Victoria’s favorite opera.
    His ‘Funeral March for a Marionette’ was used as Alfred Hitchcock’s theme music.
