The Resume

    (February 27, 1869-September 22, 1970)
    Born in Manhattan, New York
Taught at the Woman's Medical School of Northwestern University
First woman appointed to the faculty of Harvard University (1919)
Pioneer in the field of industrial toxicology and public health
Wrote 'Industrial Poisons in the United States (1925)' and 'Exploring the Dangerous Trades (1942)'

Why she might be annoying:

    She never married.
She opposed the Equal Rights Amendment.
She had only two years of formal schooling before she began to study medicine.
Although the first woman to teach at Harvard, she was excluded from the faculty club and the commencement procession.

Why she might not be annoying:

    She was a pacifist.
Her book was the first to draw attention to the dangers of industrial poisons and provided stimulus for the passage of workmen's compensation laws.
She taught classes to the poor at the Hull House, and would remain a resident for twenty two years.
She was close friends with Jane Addams, traveling with her to Europe and even serving as her personal physician.
She spent ten years touring factories across America doing research on the affect of factory emissions on workers.
She was arguably the first to draw the important conclusion of how pollution and socioeconomic inequity intersected (which now is termed environmental racism).
She was named Time magazine's Woman of the Year in medicine in 1956.
She was extremely modest about her achievements (once saying: 'Yes, I am the first woman on the Harvard faculty—but not the first one who should have been appointed!').
Within three months of her death, the U.S. Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act to improve workplace safety in the United States.
